I'd like the 'make a wish list' one. It leaves people choices if you make it up thoughtfully, it gets you something you want (which is ostensibly what they want too), and it saves them the issue of guessing and getting something you think is lame.
Wishlists like Amazons are cool because people can even shop for you online - no muss, no fuss, still a sign they care about you.
It is different if someone is giving you a one off - a painting, a photo they took mounted nicely, something made by hand, etc. Those are far more special. But if they're going to buy something, it might as well be something you like.
