SPACE.com -- Hundreds of Possible Alien Planets Discovered By NASA Spacecraft

SPACE.com -- Hundreds of Possible Alien Planets Discovered By NASA Spacecraft. The Kepler space observatory looked at 156,000 stars and found 706 possible planets. Not an encouraging ratio of planets:stars. On the other hand, 25 years ago we didn't know of any extra-solar planets; now we have a list 400 confirmed plus these 700 candidates.

1/2000 is better than 1/all of them.

If we can identify the characterisitics of a system that make it most likely to have a useful planet (from the sorts of data we have), then maybe we can get our search hit-rate up.

Frankly, we're along way from sending a probe 4 light-years and getting anything back, let alone further afield, so its all just interesting data. And I'm not fond of broadcasting to anyone and everyone... we just don't know if the neighbours are serial killers or not.
