Neet study, but the commentator's comments about the link to language are less certain.

'hard hearted' could simply be a short form for 'of a disposition unlikely to be affected by emotive stimuli' and 'rough day' could simply replace 'a day which was exhausting, uncomfortable, or physically damaging'.

In both cases, it is not coincidental that there are real world metaphors (stone, sandpaper) chosen for experience (unyielding/unchangeable, rough/painful). But that could be far less some brain pathway issue than simply phsyical analogy.
