I'm not saying this is entirely true--after 20 years, I understand Diana pretty well--but I suspect the majority of guys will agree with that quote.
Your follow up does not invalidate the rule.
The rule says nothing about single instances of the general class women (to wit, a particular woman).
That is to say, you can undersand Diana (allegedly), but that does not mean you understand *women*.
