Zombieland

A classic film, in the sense that it follows the classic story structure. We see the protagonist in his normal world; something happens which forces him to go adventuring; he meets a mentor who can help him on his journey; and so forth and so on. It was a bit strange, because while you're intended to identify with the cautious nerd Columbus, what really makes the movie is the gung ho zombie killer Tallahassee. (The same thing happened in Pirates of the Caribbean. Can you remember the protagonist's name without looking it up? Probably not, but you do remember Captain Jack Sparrow). Woody Harrelson was clearly having fun in his role, and I've heard he's looking forward to a chance to do a sequel.
Maybe the lesson for us is that we should be less cautious and more gung ho. Rule 17: Be a hero.

I think part of the reason you can't remember Orlando Bloom's character is because he was Orlando Bloom in the movie, whereas you think Jack Sparrow rather than Johnny Depp.

Not sure you should draw any inferences about life from products of Hollywood.

If Hollywood was instructing our view of life, women would all be sexy and accomodating, men would all be cool and drive fast cars and carry lots of guns. And all problems could be solved in 90 minutes with a sufficient application of firepower.

Somehow, I think Hollywood has little to say about reality....

The point is not what Hollywood says, but how we react to it. Here are two guys: one quiet and cautious; one enthusiastic, a little over the top. Which one do people remember? Which one would you rather be?

Will Turner.

I'd rather be the cautious one. The enthusiastic one inevitably cracks up under pressure and/or gets eaten by the monsters.

Unless, by some odd chance, my name was Conan and I hailed from Cimmeria. Then I'd be indestructable.
